1. Consider a model that uses a flux core wire and a shielding gas.

Yes, these features will boost the cost of the wire feed welder. But they're definitely a worthwhile investment, and will provide the best value available. A flux core wire is available at most welding supply stores. What does it do? This type of wire allows the wire welder to weld without the use of a gas mixture. However, you'll need to remove the slag that forms on the weld. Also, like the weld that a stick welder creates, you'll also have to use a wire brush to dress the bead.

2. Choose a MIG welder if you're a beginner.

These are the most common type of wire feed welders, and are also one of the most basic types. This is also known as an inert gas welder. The welder's gas cylinder contains a blend of argon gas and carbon dioxide. The gas mixture helps to protect the welding bead from any contaminates. It also produces a bead that doesn't necessitate any additional steps. The latter benefit is particularly useful for novice welders.

3. Determine if you'll rent or buy a gas cylinder.

You can easily rent the tanks, while buying one is also easy. Each tank is dated, so you'll need to either recondition or destroy it by that date. Thus, renting a tank can prevent it from becoming obsolete.

4. Determine how much power you need.

One of the major differences between the various wire feed welders available, is how powerful they are. You can find models for everyday home use, which only require 110 volts to operate. However, the average amperage for wire feed welders used in homes, tends to range from 140-160.

On the other end of the spectrum, you can find powerful models that require a whopping 230 volts to function. The higher a welder's amperage is, the thicker the steel the machine will we able to weld.
